EY bolsters legal services presence in Canada, Chile and Argentina

By EY Americas Vice Chair – Tax, Kate Barton

UntitledDemands for holistic professional services, including legal services where permissible, are increasing as companies across the globe face a greater number of complex requirements and guidelines. Cross-border business and associated compliance require professional services firms to provide more comprehensive offerings to clients. EY is addressing this need through strategic hiring and service expansion.

EY firms continue to recognize the importance of law services in the growing Americas market and, to make certain our clients’ increasing needs are met, they have recently made several critical hiring decisions to augment legal capabilities across the regions. We do not, however, provide US legal services.

In Chile, Javier Jaque and Boris Leon, along with 39 professionals on their team, have joined the Private Middle Market team of Ernst & Young Ltda. As a well-known leader in tax services for the private Middle Market sector, Ernst & Young Ltda. is focused on expanding its offerings throughout Chile, especially in the tax compliance area.

The timing is fortuitous as Chile undergoes the most sweeping tax reform since the 1970s – reform that will require implementing significant new controls and processes. Additional uncertainty around tax legislation on tax evasion and related sanctions has companies reviewing their tax structures, increasing the demand for comprehensive tax compliance services.

With the largest tax practice in Chile, Ernst & Young Ltda. aims to meet this demand through continued hiring and its relationships with tax authorities in the country, which allow the firm to thoroughly understand legislative changes and work with clients for full compliance.

Also in Chile, Paola Bruzzone has joined as the leader of the newly formed Legal Services group. Previously serving as General Counsel with a major retailer and as a partner with Lewin & Co., Paola will focus on providing corporate tax and M&A services to clients and growing the Chilean firm’s M&A-focused legal capabilities.

In Canada, Ernst & Young LLP is also expanding to meet client needs. Tony Kramreither has rejoined the firm to serve as the Managing Partner of Business Law Services in Canada. A former partner at Norton Rose Fulbright and a specialist in corporate and commercial law, Tony will oversee a wide breadth of service offerings that include corporate reorganizations, cross-border transactions/financing, incorporation, corporate secretarial support services, share/asset transactions (M&A), and due diligence.

Such hirings and associated expansions will allow EY to better serve clients, offer referrals to in-country companies in need of international services and meet the global compliance and legal service requirements of our clients.
